Follow on support is offered to women when they are rehoused after having lived in our refuge accommodation. This can take the form of practical and emotional support. The aim of follow-on support is to make the transition from refuge to a woman’s new home as smooth as possible.
You’ve achieved some incredible milestones during your time with Motherwell District Women’s Aid (MDWA) – milestones that may have felt out of reach when your journey began. As you prepare to move into your new tenancy, whether a flat or a house you’re taking a powerful step toward independence and building a new life in the local community.
To support you during this transition, MDWA will continue to offer help through our Follow-On Service, delivered by your Key Worker who supported you during your stay in safe accommodation. This service is designed to provide continuity and reassurance as you settle into your new home.
• 6–8 sessions with your Key Worker, offering practical and emotional support to help you adjust to your new environment.
• If you have children, we aim to complete their support while you’re still in safe accommodation. If this isn’t possible, your Key Worker will discuss ongoing support options with you before you leave.
• Support will begin with fortnightly sessions, gradually moving to monthly check-ins as you gain confidence and independence.
• Unlike the intensive support model in safe accommodation, Follow-On Support is based on our Outreach Model—this means support is by appointment, less frequent, and tailored to your evolving needs.
• Please note once you leave safe accommodation, the emergency helpline will no longer be available to you. This service is reserved for women currently residing in MDWA safe accommodation.
We wish you every success in your new home and in this next chapter of your life. Thank you for placing your trust in MDWA. Remember, while this part of your journey is ending, our support doesn’t have to—if you ever need us again, we’re here.
MDWA is a grassroots, community-driven support charity and network for women and children at risk of domestic abuse.
MDWA is affiliated with Scottish Women’s Aid.
