Our service users can be affected emotionally from the impact of the trauma of Domestic Abuse but also the women and their children may have had to leave their home, their job and their family and friends. They suddenly have no security, and no community around them. MDWA helps them not only to overcome their trauma and learn to cope with what has happened to them emotionally and physically, but we help them to rebuild their lives in a new community, learn to rebuild and nurture new relationships, learn to trust again, and to find a new home and to learn how to be independent.
Some women do not need our safe accommodation, so we provide our one-to-one support through our outreach service. We also provide group programmes to all our service users including specialist group programmes for children.
We employ a trauma-informed approach in all our programmes, which includes individual one-to-one sessions, group work, and specialised support for children who have witnessed or experienced domestic abuse. Our trained professionals prioritise creating safe and trusting environments that facilitate healing and recovery. By addressing both the psychological and emotional impacts of abuse, we support survivors in building resilience and reclaiming their lives.
Outreach support is delivered throughout our local community, support can be provided by telephone, online or face to face. This support is available to women who do not want or need to access refuge accommodation.
We offer a range of groupwork programmes which can help with recovering from trauma, building confidence and providing practical and emotional tools around recovery.
MDWA is a grassroots, community-driven support charity and network for women and children at risk of domestic abuse.
MDWA is affiliated with Scottish Women’s Aid.
